The epidermis forms the outer barrier. Below it, the dermis contains connective tissue, follicles, vessels, and nerves.
A membrane surrounds the developing antler beneath the skin. Around bone, it is called the periosteum.

Blood vessels support living skin and developing tissue. The velvet stays attached while the antler lengthens and bone forms.
No. Bone develops beneath the velvet. The skin covering is eventually shed, exposing the antler that has already formed.
Yes. Velvet contains sensory nerves, and growing antlers are sensitive to injury. That is different from the exposed hard antler after velvet has been shed. A photo alone cannot tell us what an individual elk is feeling.
Both contain a collagen framework reinforced with mineral, largely calcium phosphate. The extraordinary part is the cycle: an elk grows a new rack, exposes the hard bone, then eventually casts the antlers and starts again.
August is a common transition period in Yellowstone. The timing varies with population and individual condition, so the sequence is more reliable than one calendar date.
No. Velvet comes off in late summer as the antlers harden. The rack stays attached through the rut. Casting the entire antler happens later, commonly in late winter or spring.
